It seems that every golfing magazine or website you look at, there’s another GPS/rangefinder on the market. Be it a stand alone device or a new app for a smart phone, there’s plenty of competition out there. Read on and I’ll prove that competition is GREAT for us consumers.
I’m kind of kicking myself for not saving the email I sent to SkyGolf a year+ ago. Not only was I getting a bit frustrated with these other devices (re: uPro) that were coming out with cooler features than my SG-3, there were some simple things missing, things that should have been there in the first place. The response from SkyGolf was “we’re working on it”. Surprise, they meant it!
This is the third software upgrade in less than a year now, the others involving more rounds to store on your device, depth of green function, recording your shots during your round, and even a clock. This time, 3 major features:QuickVue™,IntelliGreen® Pro, and HoleVue™ (Beta):
And a quick description of each:
Just use your CaddieSync app and it’ll take you right to the upgrades. And I know this is hard to do for some people, but just read and follow the instructions. Seriously though, there’s nothing difficult about it.
And you’ll see, when you get prompted to turn on your GPS:
Finally, you’ll have to “reset” your GPS, and it’ll show you how to do that to. Now you’re good to go.
Now since I own a SG-3, we’re talking a black and white display. I think I paid just under $300 for it, and I still can’t justify paying almost $200 more for a colour screen, although I would like it. But c’mon, $200 more? So, I fired it up to see the new stuff and there it was, an image of the shape of the fairway. Noice!
Truthfully, not the most detailed image, but if you look closer you can see “markers” on the fairway, which is in more detail on a different “page” on the GPS(this feature was always there on the unit).
When you go to your list of golf courses in your “Favourites” tab at the website, you’ll see the new icons beside your courses. To me, the first icon, on the left, True Mapping, is probably the most important. That tells you that someone from SkyGolf walked the yardages off by foot. This is the most accurate way to get true yardages.
HoleVue looks interesting to me, but it’s still limited to a few golf courses and is still very “Beta”. But that’ll eventually grow and get better.
Now the only thing that I haven’t quite figured out yet is Intelligreen Pro. I have not seen any red icons, like in the first picture in the beginning of this post. It looks like it will show more detail on the greens, but again, why haven’t I seen any yet? I did find this description though:
Hopefully, it’s just too Beta right now as well. Being in the far away place of western Canada, we kind of get put towards the end of the line when it comes to courses mapped, let alone remapped for all this new info they’re going to need.
Finally, here’s what it all looks like in colour. I found this screeny on the ‘Net, for you big spenders:
